Mayor Wiza Seeking Donations for Fireworks

Mayor Wiza started a fundraiser with the goal of adding just $5,000 to our fireworks budget. Many people have donated $10 or more. We’re taking donations at City Hall and via a GoFundMe page. We are about $1,800 short of that $5,000 goal.

Riverfront Rendezvous is less than a month away, and it looks to be another spectacular celebration at Pfiffner Pioneer Park. The entertainment has been booked and the food vendors are set.

Nearly three months ago, Mayor Mike Wiza looked into what surrounding municipalities spend on fireworks displays and more importantly, where that money comes from.

"I found that everyone around us funds their fireworks displays primarily through donations,” Wiza said. "Stevens Point was using all general fund dollars to support our display, and at only $10,000 we were far behind what others were doing."

The Mayor gathered this information from surrounding municipalities:
  • Plover's budget is $22,000 and is all from donations.
  • Rosholt spends $3,500 - $1,000 from the Village, and the balance through donations.
  • Waupaca spends $15,000 - $2,500 from the City & Chamber, and they use room tax dollars and donations.
  • Wausau spends $12,000 - sponsored by the Jaycees & Balloon rally, room tax, and donations.
  • Wisconsin Rapids spends $17,000 - $4000 from the City, the rest from Community Foundation donations.
"I thought we’d allow people to make the choice. If we want to have larger and longer displays, let’s raise the money and do it. I started a fundraiser with the goal of adding just $5,000 to our fireworks budget," said Wiza. "While I haven’t had time to do a lot of asking, people have stepped up and donated $10 or more. We've been taking donations at City Hall and also via a GoFundMe page I started.”
