Stevens Point Fire Fighters Turn Out in Pink this October

Stevens Point Fire Fighters are sporting pink throughout October in an effort to fight breast and other cancers. They will be selling pink shirts at Station 1 all month. Proceeds benefit the Saint Michael’s Foundation. Youth - X-Large $10 XXL $13.

Fire fighters exposed to carcinogens and other chemicals while on the job are disproportionately diagnosed with breast cancer – just one of many cancers linked to the work fire fighters do. With one in eight women diagnosed each year, an estimated 252,710 new cases of breast cancer and 40,610 deaths will be reported in 2017. Among all women affected, 85 percent have no family history.

"Fire fighters are motivated to get involved for many reasons, and often it’s because they have been personally affected by the disease," says Jason Pettis, a fire fighter with the Stevens Point Fire Department and a director of Stevens Point Fire Fighters [Local 484] Charitable Foundation. "We are supporting breast cancer awareness and prevention by encouraging others to give so that no breast cancer patient goes without life-saving treatments or having hope for a cure. Everyone is at risk for breast cancer.”

Your Stevens Point Fire Fighters encourage everyone in this community to participate in breast cancer awareness and prevention activities. They will be selling pink shirts at Station 1, located at 1701 Franklin Street all month with proceeds being donated to Saint Michael’s Foundation. Their partnership with Saint Michael’s Foundation Breast Care Center will benefit breast cancer patients in Portage County.

The Stevens Point Fire Fighters saw an increasing number of requests for donations, and in 2015, the Stevens Point Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation, Inc, was established as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, with current and retired members of the Stevens Point Professional Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 484 Union. They are committed in being active and giving back to their community. They are very pleased with what they have accomplished so far, donating over $54,690 back to the community.
