Stevens Point Launches 2018 Paint the Plow Project

With winter just around the corner, the City of Stevens Point is kicking off a fun new project Madison, Jefferson, McKinley, Washington and Bannach elementary schools called, "Paint the Plow."

Inspired by an article he read, Assistant Superintendent of Streets Luke Kronstedt approached Mayor Mike Wiza in 2017 with the project, allowing area students to creatively personalize the plow blades used for snow removal in winter.

"Last year was a huge success and we were able to get dozens of kids involved," says Mayor Mike Wiza. "We had some very creative designs last year and this year should be even better. Of course, the plows will be featured in the Christmas parade again."

The concept has students painting the plow blade in a design or theme they choose, supervised by school faculty. The project received a generous donation of $500 from Frank’s Hardware on Highway 10 East in Stevens Point
to pay for paint. The plows are going to be dropped off at the schools next week, and should be painted by late September. Once the painting is done, the blades will be clear coated to help the paint last as long as possible during the plowing season.

The plows with be put on trucks that have those schools in their respective winter plow routes so the students will be able to see their handiwork plowing snow in their own neighborhoods.

"The schools have been wonderful to work with and Frank’s Hardware donating the supplies is a big help," Said Kronstedt, who put together the program. "We might not be able to do this without all of the community support."
