June 1 News! See photos taken from the new Observation Deck Governor Doyle Approves $918,000 Project at Airport Governor Jim Doyle has approved a $918,150 project to install an instrument landing system (ILS) and a partial parallel taxiway at the Stevens Point Municipal Airport. The Governor's action releases $918,150 in federal funds to complete the project. According to Mike Gabor, airport engineering specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the federal funds will be used to complete an environmental assessment, provide design and construction engineering, provide approach clearing and land easements, and construct and install the landing system. The instrument landing system will provide needed guidance for aircraft into the airport during marginal weather conditions. Many local businesses will benefit from the enhanced instrument landing system. The project is expected to begin in May, 2008 and will be completed by October, 2008. Stevens Point Municipal Airport consists of two runways that together accommodate some 37,000 aircraft take-offs and landings each year. A newly completed business/industrial park south of the city has attracted businesses that depend on the airport to conduct their business operations. Owned and operated by the City of Stevens Point, Stevens Point Municipal Airport is located on Hwy. 66 just east of I-39. The airport provides a safe and convenient environment for travel, business aviation, and related business activities. In 2003, the airport recorded 36,750 aircraft operations and was home for 45-based aircraft, including four jets, 40 single-engine, and one multi-engine propeller airplane. Travel Guard, Med Topics Unlimited, Sentry Insurance, Freight Runners Express, and the Rettler Corporation all operate business aircraft from Stevens Point Municipal Airport. UPS operates flights on a daily basis that provide essential cargo services to the local and regional community. St. Michael's Hospital uses the airport on average of once a week to transport administration to and from Milwaukee. The airport has one Fixed Base Operator, Sentry Aviation Services Inc., four industrial and corporate flight departments based on the airport, twenty-two T, twelve individual, and four larger corporate hangars.
