Mayor Wescott Endorses Climate Protection
Agreement
On January 8, 2007 Mayor Wescott signed onto the
US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Under the agreement headed by Mayor Nickels of Seattle, Washington, participating
cities commit to take following three actions:
- Strive to meet or beat the Kyoto Protocol targets
in their own communities, through actions ranging from anti-sprawl land-use policies to urban forest restoration
projects to public information campaigns;
- Urge their state governments, and the federal government,
to enact policies and programs to meet or beat the greenhouse gas emission reduction target suggested for the United
States in the Kyoto Protocol - 7% reduction from 1990 levels by 2012; and
- Urge the U.S. Congress to pass the bipartisan greenhouse
gas reduction legislation, which would establish a national emission trading system
As of January 4, 2007, 355 mayors representing over
54 million Americans have accepted the challenge.
The City of Stevens Point has already enacted a
number of initiatives to promote a environmentally friendly atmosphere. These initiatives include switching traffic
signal lights to light-emitting diode (LED) and replacing streetlights with lower voltage/wattage lamps to reduce
energy consumption.
In the last 18 months, all of the city buildings
have undergone energy audits helping to find ways to reduce energy consumption. In addition, the city continues
to promote public transportation as a way of reducing the number of vehicles on the roadways, therefore reducing
emissions. The city continues to seek other alternatives and initiatives to find ways to reduce energy consumption
as well as reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
