The following report is a highlight of current/anticipated activities in the Department of Public Works. If there are any questions, please let me know.

1. Stevens Point Airport

• Airport Fuel Remediation. No change from last month. The fuel remediation work at the airport continues to operate in a "non-emergency" mode. The remediation system is in "winter mode." In the spring, the final remediation plan will be put in place.
• Airport Fuel Dispensers. Construction on the fuel dispensers and piping at the airport continues. Northwest Petroleum is expected to install the dispensers and card readers as soon as weather permits and all of the details are worked out. This portion of the project is going slower than expected.
• Planned Airport Improvements. The planned improvements continue to move forward. The state has selected Becher Hoppe as the consultant for the building improvements at the airport. We expect to have more information next month.
• Airport Management and Operations. The sale of the sentry hangars was completed prior to the end of the year. The city is managing and operating the airport. C/T John Schlice has been working closely with us to set up all of the financial systems necessary. Sentry has donated all of the office supplies and equipment in the terminal, except that the city will pay for some inventory items such as fuel, oil and training materials.
• Airport RFP. We have a preliminary draft of the RFP documents. It is being reviewed by staff and then will be open to the pilot group for comment before being advertised. We have been in contact with the Bureau of Aeronautics for advise on where to advertise. We expect to have the ads placed this month and have the RFP documents available for download on our web site.

2. Engineering

• Bid #04-04; West Side Force Main Installation Project. No change in status from last month. This project is still on hold, pending additional evaluation of alternatives base on what Stora Enso's plans for relocating their effluent line
• Whitetail Trail Subdivision. Construction and bidding documents are finalized. We anticipate opening bids February 10th.

3. Streets

• Snow & Ice. The ice storm was difficult to deal with, but I believe the Streets Division did a commendable job. Pre-treatment of the streets is ineffective while it is raining since the rain just washes everything off the street. Once things started to freeze, road salt could be put down. Side streets and sidewalks were the most challenging. We put "extra" salt in the salt/sand and that appears to have worked fairly well. We are expecting additional snow on top of the ice. That will make things difficult, particularly on the sidewalks. Other operations continue as normal, but much or our resources went toward snow and ice control.
• Parks Department Equipment. The following equipment purchases are recommended per the attached memo from Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, Dennis Laidlaw:

  a. Five Toro Mowers from Reinders, for $97,029.06
  b. One Smithco Turf Sweeper from Horst Distributing, Inc. for $16750.00
  c. One Smithco Ball Diamond Groomer from Horst Distributing, Inc. for $10,395.00.

• Police Department Squad Cars. Staff recommends purchasing eight (8) squad cars from Scaffidi Motors for $169,192.00. The bid price per vehicle is lower than the bid price per vehicle two years ago. The attached memo from Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, Dennis Laidlaw and Police Chief, Jeff Morris recommend approving the purchase.
