Application/Permit/License
to do Work in a City Right-of-Way

Working in the public right-of-way is generally considered to be any work done within 30-33 feet from the center of the street or between sidewalks (if present).

Working in Public Right of Way requires a permit for the following:

1. Adding a second driveway or curb cut.
2. Paving or graveling along or near the shoulder of the road.
3. Landscaping such as decorative mulch or stones, timbers, plants, fence, sprinklers, retaining walls, etc.
4. Temporarily placing a dumpster, trailer or equipment in right of way. (Applicant must explain the necessity of placing item in right of way.)
5. Filling or improving a ditch or swale. (Filling of ditch generally not allowed.)
6. Street opening for service installation or repair.
7. Utility work or maintenance - gas, electric, cable, telephone, etc.
8. Installing or repairing sidewalk, or curb and gutter.
9. Storm water/drainage applications including culvert installation.
10. Any activity which will require traffic lane closures, detours, or involving installation of structures in the right-of-way.

Permittee is responsible for any traffic control required either before or after issuance of a Permit or License.

Mailboxes do not require a permit. However, they must be constructed in a way that does not hinder or obstruct snow plowing or street sweeping activities. Mailboxes cannot be constructed of concrete, masonry, stone, or other material that would be considered immovable or a danger to traffic. The City of Stevens Point will not be responsible for damages caused by snow plowing or street sweeping. Please check with your local Postal Service for standards of your mailbox construction and delivery in your area.

Always call Digger's Hotline 1-800-242-8511 before you dig in a right-of-way or anywhere else.
