| Looking for Residents to Fill Issue Subcommittees The Stevens Point Eco-Municipality Task Force is looking for area residents to help fill its subcommittees. The Stevens Point Eco-Municipality Task Force formed in June of 2007, under the direction of Mayor Andrew Halverson, with the goal to develop a sustainable framework for our community's future. "We hope to build on past successes to strengthen our future," Halverson says. Over the course of the next year, the Task Force will develop specific recommendations to build a sustainable community. The Task Force identified eight main issues facing our community. To study these issues and help develop recommendations, the Task Force is organizing the following eight subcommittees, and is looking for interested residents to serve on them: 1. Development and Land Use 2. Water and Wastewater 3. Parks and Tourism 4. Civic Involvement 5. Food 6. Green Building & Energy 7. Transportation 8. Waste & Recycling "We want area residents, our community experts, to identify priorities and develop concrete recommendations," says Alderperson Amy Heart, Vice-Chair of the Task Force. If someone is interested in serving on these subcommittees, please contact Amy Heart at 345-2739 or E-Mail Amy Heart. The Task Force will involve and educate the public. "This process will be a success only if we have public input and involvement," says Alderperson Heart. "We will listen to community members' opinions and ideas, but we will also work to demonstrate why becoming an eco-municipality is a great opportunity for Stevens Point." "Eco-Municipality" is an important label for the Task Force. "Its name comes from both 'economics' and 'ecology,'" notes Alderperson Heart. "This Task Force has begun an important process to create an economically, environmentally and socially healthy community; and it will only happen with cooperation and involvement from all aspects of our community." The Stevens Point Eco-Municipality Task Force consists of 13 members, appointed by Mayor Halverson: Mayor Andrew Halverson, Chair Alderperson Amy Heart, Vice-Chair Alderperson Hans Walter, City Council President Tom Barrett, Stevens Point Convention and Visitor Bureau Bill Berry, Plover River Alliance Erik Carlson, Ellis Stone Jackson Case, Architectural Service Anna Haines, UW-Stevens Point Center for Land Use Education John Jury, Community Foundation Steve Lane, Portage County Business Council, First Weber Lynn Markham, Land Use Specialist Gene Numsen, Citizen Member Carie Winn, Citizen Member For more information on the Stevens Point Eco-Municipality Task Force, contact Task Force Vice-Chair Amy Heart at 345-2739 or E-Mail Amy Heart.
