Community Invited to Eco-Municipality Kick-Off

The public is invited to share their vision for a sustainable Stevens Point at the Eco-Municipality Kick Off event on Tuesday, October 30 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Ben Franklin Jr. High School, 2000 Polk St. The Stevens Point Eco-Municipality Task Force is organizing the event.

"An eco-municipality is characterized by a community working together towards economical and ecological sustainability," said Mayor Andrew Halverson, who created the special Task Force earlier this year. "We can create a strong and healthy community that is economically vibrant without sacrificing our environment."

The Eco-Municipality Kick-Off will feature keynote speaker Mary Rehwald. Rehwald sits on the Ashland City Council and is an integral part Ashland's sustainability movement and their adoption of the eco-municipality resolution.

The public will be invited to provide their vision for a sustainable Stevens Point. Anna Haines, Director for the Center for Land Use Education, will facilitate an active community input session, which will allow for brainstorming on a variety of issues. "This is an important exercise to gather ideas for the future of our community," said Amy Heart, city alderperson and co-chair of the Task Force. "Citizens will be asked to think 20 and even 50 years into the future to picture what a sustainable community could be."

From the Eco-Municipality Kick-Off, the Task Force will work to develop policy recommendations and community projects. "Attend this listening session, and help make Stevens Point an economically, ecologically and socially healthy community," said Halverson.
