The Stevens Point Fire Department is joining forces with many local sponsors to host a Fire Safety Awareness Week Kick-Off event at the CenterPoint MarketPlace on Saturday, October 6, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. This free event will include many demonstrations, including: fire being put out by a fire sprinkler system; campfire, kitchen, and appliance safety; escaping from a smoke filled room; a virtual fire extinguisher; and much more!

• Fire Department sets two rooms on fire! See what happens in the room which features a sprinkler system.
• "Brecker Bunny Learns to be Careful" book release. Free to all attending families.
• Demonstrations including campfire, kitchen and appliance safety.
• Kids Escape from a Smoke-Filled Room! Practice getting out of a room filled with smoke.
• Meet a real-life firefighter!
• See Emergency vehicles!
• And much, much more!

Outside demonstrations will take place just outside the back door of the Children's Museum (JC Penney's wing). Indoor demonstrations located in the old Maurice's store.

Schedule of Events:

10:00 a.m. - Safety house demonstration - outside
10:00 a.m. - Demonstrations open inside
10:45 a.m. - Virtual fire extinguisher demonstration inside
11:00 a.m. - Safety house demonstration - outside
11:00 a.m. - Book signing - Brecker Bunny Learns to be Careful!
11:45 a.m. - Virtual fire extinguisher demonstration - inside
12:00 p.m. - Safety house demonstration - outside
12:30 p.m. - Sprinkler demonstration - outside

Two similar 8 x 8 rooms will be set aflame simultaneously. One room will be equipped with an automatic sprinkler system and the other will not. You will be able to witness first hand how quickly fire spreads and also the life-saving benefits of a sprinkler system. In less than four minutes the room without sprinklers will be fully engulfed in flames, flashover will occur right before your eyes, and then extinguished by the Stevens Point Fire Department. In the sprinklered room, the fire will activate a sprinkler and in approximately 30 seconds will either control or extinguish the fire.

1:00 p.m. - Safety house demonstration - outside
1:45 p.m. - Virtual fire extinguisher demonstration - inside
2:00 p.m. - Demonstrations close
