#2

#2 Plastic Bottles and Jugs

How to Prepare:

  • Check for a neck (see below).
  • Identify #1 and #2 plastics by looking for the symbol on the bottom of the bottle or container (see below).
  • Rinse them well.
  • Remove and discard caps, lids, and metals.
  • Flatten the bottles and jugs if possible.
  • Labels may stay on.

Do Not Include:

  • non-bottle items such as bakery, produce, deli, meat containers or trays
  • bottles in any color other than clear, green, or blue
  • motor oil or anti-freeze containers
  • plastic bags or films
  • tubs, cups, pails (wide-mouth containers)
  • plastic caps, covers, food trays, toys
  • Styrofoam, or #3 - #7 items.
  • If a container has a dimple in the bottom, it's not recyclable.

Check for a neck! The only plastics accepted for recycling must have a neck and must be a # 1 or # 2. Check for a threaded bottle opening that is smaller at the top than the bottom, and be sure the container is marked #1 or #2 on the bottom. This category includes plastic water, soda, laundry and dish detergent, shampoo, and milk bottles.

Check the bottom of plastic items for their number! Many whipped cream, margarine, cottage cheese, and other tub containers are no longer #2 plastic and therefore are not recyclable.
