Tot Spot Program
The Tot Spot program of the Stevens Point Fire Department was initiated in 1994 for the purpose of informing and educating the public regarding passenger safety.

Each year we respond to hundreds of car accidents. Many of these accidents result in serious injuries or deaths which could have been avoided by the use of safety belts. Proper safety belt use is simple for any adult, but not so simple for children. So, with children in mind, we set up Tot Spot.

Here's how it works:
  • Members of the fire department keep an eye out for children riding in vehicles.
  • When a child is observed, it is noted whether or not the child is properly restrained; also noted are the date, time and location as well as the vehicle license number.
  • This information is passed on to the Department's confidential secretary.
  • The secretary obtains address information from the city police department and mails an informational packet to the vehicle owner.
There are two types of packets:
  • Non-violators receive a letter of commendation, two coupons for Belt's Soft Serv, and two each of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Click-It Cricket bookmarks and stickers.
  • Violators receive a letter of admonishment, the bookmarks and stickers, and a passenger safety brochure.

It is difficult to measure the effectiveness of this service, but if it works even just once, it is worth the effort.
