4. Update on Arts Council Grants and Poet
Laureate
Schrader stated that at the May Council meeting,
the Mayor will be appointing the first Poet Laureate for the City of Stevens Point. That the Arts Council had three
poets apply, and recommended Lynda Reichert to the Mayor.
Schrader also reported that the council granted funds to the following organizations for their 2001 granting Cycle;
Monteverdi Master Chorale $1,500.00, Central WI Symphony Orchestra $5,000.00, Central WI Children’s Museum $1,500.00,
Central WI Area Community Theatre $6,500.00, Mission Coffee House Poetry Series $500.00.
5. Request to Hire Architect/Engineer to
Design Addition to Bandshell
Schrader said that after talking to the City Attorney,
he recommended that the Commission grant the Director permission to hire an architect/engineer to design the addition
to the bandshell. Schrader thought we may look for requests similar to the ones we received when we developed the
restrooms in the Central Company. After the design is complete, it will come back to the Commission for approval;
in that this isn’t like purchasing a shelter package, but an addition to a nice looking, highly visible, park structure.
Schrader stated that he would recommend that, if the bandshell addition, because of the existing building lines,
couldn’t be added onto with a good look, the project shouldn’t happen. The Commission agreed that the look of the
addition, needed to fit well with the look of the building. Also, if the current bandshell was altered in any way,
there would be a need to analyze the affect that changes on the existing structure, would have on the sound quality.
Schrader stated that we may want to look at changing the existing siding during the addition, in that the existing
wood siding is high maintenance. The project will be done this fall.
Motion was made by Phillips, seconded by Glodosky to approve staff to hire a architect/engineer to design an addition
on the Bandshell. Final design to come back to the Commission for approval.
Ayes, All; Nays, none. Motion carried.
6. Directors Report
- Schrader reported that next month we need to address
the two houses we own on Bush St. Do we want to rent out the homes or have the homes moved (sell) off the property
and turn it into green space.
- Cell towers is up in Zenoff Park. Tower in Goerke will be arriving on June 9. Building addition for Goerke tower
is nearly complete.
- Schrader stated that in reference to the Open Letter about opening the wading Pool during Learn to Swim, it would
be difficult to offer both swimming lessons and open pool at the same time.
