The meeting was called to order at 4:30
p.m. April 7, 2005 by Chairman Hans Walther.
1. Approval of the minutes
from the March 1, 2005 Transportation Commission meeting.
Joe Kanter moved to approve the minutes from the March 1, 2005 Transportation Commission Meeting. Fred Hopfensperger
seconded the motion.
Ayes All; Nays None; Motion Carried
2. Update on UWSP U-Pass
semester statistics.
Manager Lemke reported that the UWSP U-Pass ridership for the month of March 2005 was 7,120 rides and April 1-5
was 742 rides.
3. Discussion on late night
bus service as requested by the Leadership of Portage County group. No action will be taken, discussion only.
Chairman Walther explained that agenda item #3 was placed on the agenda per request from the Leadership of Portage
County group. Members of the group were unable to attend the Commission Meeting therefore this agenda item will
be tabled until the next meeting date.
4. Manager's Report:
*Update on 2005-2006 U-Pass Program
Manager Lemke indicated that the funding has been
approved for the U-Pass program for 2005-2006; however the agreement has not yet been signed.
*Update on Sign Project
Badger State Industries is receiving bids at this
time for the local installation of approximately 150 bus stop signs. The project will be underway soon with completion
scheduled for July 2005.
*Summary of D.C. trip
Manager Lemke along with several other Wisconsin
Urban and Rural Transit Association members were in Washington D.C. March 5th through the 9th to promote public
transportation and lobby for continued funding. The group visited the following congressional offices: Obey, Oberstar,
Green, Baldwin, Moore, Kind, Petri, Sensenbrenner, and Ryan. Senator Herb Kohl and Senator Russ Feingold also met
with the WURTA group. The ATU (Amalgamated Transit Union) as well as the APTA (American Public Transit Association)
Conferences were being held in D.C. at the same time and were attended by WURTA members as well.
*Discussion on RTA meetings in Michigan
Manager Lemke and other WURTA members will be in
Michigan April 25-29th meeting with Michigan transit agencies regarding RTAs (Regional Transit Authorities). The
transit agencies that are involved in the RTA that will be visited are Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Grand Rapids. The
purpose of the trip is to become educated on Regional Transit Authorities. Susan stated that both state and federally
there is a push to move toward coordination of services, so it is important that we research the RTAs at this time
to prepare for the future.
*Brochure update
Manager Lemke distributed new brochures that have
been developed for the Transit System. There are three brochures; Point Plus, the University and a total System
brochure. Susan indicated that the brochures are being distributed through out the City.
5. Next meeting date.
Elbert Rackow made a motion to meet on April 14, 2005 at 4:30. Chairman Walther seconded the motion.
