2007-2011 Long Range
(Hotel) Room Tax Committee
March 28, 2007
Call to order 7:02 p.m.
1. Approval of March 14 & 15, 2007 minutes
Motion by Berry, seconded by Disher; to approve
March 14
& 15, 2007 minutes.
Ayes; all nays; none. Motion carried.
2. Discussion and Recommendation on Proposals
Request to formalize the meeting a bit more by waiting to be called upon.
Note that we had heard from a number of project
representatives and would cover their last thoughts as their project came up in our discussions.
Reviewed the ratings and ranking sheet that Tom had produced from the individual sheets.
Decided to talk about each project one at a time, starting in order of our average group rankings.
Soccer
very positive on what they have been able to accomplish
without support
would like to see effort to solicit other municipalities
would like breakdown of budget
additional information sent to chair on questions
he had (for the record)
would need agreement with Ice Hawks to enter their
lot
Bike Underpass
not seen as important to tourism
would help get people and guests out of town safely
and add to green tourism trend
Point 150
felt amount too high, even with matching funds.
feeling that when it is over, it is over, .not
a project that goes on giving
would bring people in that would learn of other
aspects of town.
needs an activity that has more of a crescendo
committee would take these thoughts into consideration
when developed, that these were just ideas of what could be.
use Special Events fund
Mural project
no issues
good idea
Birding
need to use these dollars for projects, signage,
etc. that help with tourism
possibility of leveraging project money with state
tourism money for promotion. Barret and John M. to talk
Would possibly provide the bus tourism (Motorcoach)
we need
More boomers than one would think involved, but
not as obvious as more open area programs
great numbers in silent sports
Sculpture Park
need good feasibility study
perhaps bring in and expert with landscape architectural
abilities
doesn't have to be real expensive to get things
started
not in best place. Should be more out in open
is in good place for linkage to trail and Zenoff
parking
good for Motorcaoch attraction
Children's Museum
Too many questions about location, size needed,
other agency commitments, funding sources
professional feasibility study about above, not
just raising funds
Would be great traffic building for downtown
what optimum size for our area? Expandability would
be helpful for future
Concrete proposal might be timely as downtown revitalization
discussion occur
Renewable energy transportation
bus rental one time to determine popularity from
residents and if more rooms are rented as result
learn to make change and go to a few more bucks,
won't need subsidy
not a project of program..doesn't fit this grant
requirement (Special Events?)
perhaps just the bus rental as a contribution
others at the fair might come into town for other
things if convenient
Nature Trek
need better estimates
matching funds from private businesses
new pier would look better than what is there now
UW baseball
used for other things than just youth baseball,
Special Olympics that does bring in lots of room nights
contribution not too much and continues long tradition
of town-gown sharing of facilities
need to look at this as part of the whole issue
of youth baseball needs, tournaments, etc.
Youth baseball/girls softball
need to charge more like soccer
lots of kids from outside of point involved. Have
other municipalities/county been approached?
Are there ways to solve their problems without
new diamonds by working with schools?
Schrader to continue to seek less expensive ways
to resolve needs.
not much interest in messing with Iverson diamond
Skateboard park
lots of other programs we have put money into,
but nothing here for skateboard.
needs to have a wow factor if going to attract
users
would indeed call on city staffing, but might cut
down on police issues at same time.
have you gone to other municipalities/county for
support
no place in town for boarders to go, almost all
places are illegal
perhaps a two year commitment based on matching
capability
Open Space
We have plenty of open space already
fits in neatly with eco-tourism trends
Plover River area also important to quality water
supply
Open space request about more than Plover River
corridor
could be used for WPS solution, landfill piece
needed, other important possibilities we can't see now
could be set aside with other money after feasibility
studies, we could come back together in three years.
2713 roof and other projects
what would we have with this we don't already have?
would keep bird stuff off the display and make
it look finished
discussion of the price of just the roof .appears
to be $12,500
How much has been given to this project from the
start, around $50,000 a guess (Jury and Schrader to look up)
Portage County Historic - firehouse
want to see the level of community interest in
the way of money before committing
shouldn't all of our exhibits be together instead
of spread out, need too many volunteers to have them open
city sold for $1, now asking city for $400,000
to fix.
does this fit in well with neighborhood
2713 train
concern about access and safety.
3. Announcements
next meeting will be at 7 pm, Wednesday, April
18 at the Rec Building.
The timing on our recommendations has been pushed
back to May so new mayor and council members might have input.
All member to have a personal set of recommendations
ready for the next meeting. Hopefully, we will be close enough that we can find common ground and finish up.
