Police & Fire Commission
July 8, 2008, 2:02 p.m.

Roll Call: Commissioners Meyer, Nuck, Rice, Schleihs and Taylor

Also Present: Police Chief Morris, Interim Fire Chief Zinda, Mayor Halverson, Deputy Chief Kujawa, Lisa Jakusz, Captain Dowling, Captain Ruder, Alderperson Stroik, Peter Ostrowski

2. Adjourn into closed session (approximately 2:00 p.m.) pursuant to Wis. Stats. Sec. 19.85 (1) (c) for an entry level firefighter/paramedic interview

Commissioner Meyer moved, seconded by Commissioner Taylor, to adjourn into closed session.

Ayes: Meyer, Nuck, Rice, Schleihs, Taylor
Nays: None. Motion carried.

3. Reconvene into open session (approximately 2:15 p.m.) for possible action on item 2.

Commissioner Meyer moved, seconded by Commissioner Rice, to reconvene into open session.

Ayes: Meyer, Nuck, Rice, Schleihs, Taylor
Nays: None. Motion carried.

Commissioner Taylor moved, seconded by Commissioner Rice, to approve the hiring of Peter Ostrowski as probationary firefighter/paramedic contingent upon the successful completion of all remaining hiring protocol and testing.

Ayes: Meyer, Nuck, Rice, Schleihs, Taylor
Nays: None. Motion carried.

4. Discussion, with possible action, identifying a title and wording to revise the city ordinance for Jeff Morris' position

Commissioner Taylor moved, seconded by Commissioner Meyer, to request the common council to create a deputy chief of police position within the police department. Upon creation of this position Jeff Morris shall retain the title of Chief of Police while exploring the concept of a public safety department. The deputy chief position will remain in effect until the study is completed or a decision is made in regard to a public safety department, but not beyond June 1, 2009.

Ayes, all; nays, none. Motion carried.

5. Discussion, with possible action, settlement on overtime grievance within the Police Department

Commissioner Rice moved, seconded by Commissioner Taylor, to approve the side letter resolving the overtime grievance as presented.

Ayes, all; nays, none. Motion carried.

6. Adjournment

The meeting adjourned at 3:12 p.m.
