On Monday, February 19, 2007, the City of Stevens Point Common Council approved the concept of building a skate park in Goerke Park in Stevens Point. This action confirmed recommendations made earlier by the city's Board of Parks Commissioners and Plan Commission.

The Stevens Point
Skate Park Committee formed in 2005 to investigate the need for a skate park within the city limits. The committee is comprised of individuals from a Leadership Portage County group and several community and business leaders. See a List of our Members.

The work of the committee, and the issue of a potential skate park in Stevens Point, has been documented in several Stevens Point Journal Articles.

Since forming, the committee has investigated the interest in a skate park though a survey of local youth. See the Survey Results Below.

The committee has also coordinated a potential skate park site assessment. After rating nearly one dozen locations, the committee determined the following sites may be best suited for a skate park within the City of Stevens Point:

1. Former WPS property located between Crosby Ave. and Centerpoint Dr.

2. Goerke Park property located at the intersection of Minnesota Ave. and Main St.

3. Northwest corner of YMCA property on Franklin and Prentice.

Survey Results

During the month of March, 2006, just over 1000 surveys were distributed in area schools to assess youth interest in and the need for a skate park in Stevens Point. 922 youth responded to the questions, including:

Have you skated? 85% Yes

Do you currently skate? 48% Yes

Is there a need for a skate park in Stevens Point? 73% Yes

172 youth reported traveling to other communities to utilize skating facilities.
