Travel Training
Travel Training is a program to assist people who want to know their travel options in Portage County and develop the skills to use those options with confidence.
Transit staff is available to conduct group presentations to highlight public transportation and how to navigate the bus system. Travel Training teaches users that Public Transit is reliable, safe, and convenient, and increases independence, confidence, and self-reliance.
What Is Travel Training?
Travel Training involves a series of steps from the initial one-on-one instructor training to gradually become empowered and confident enough to travel independently.
The Travel Trainer will meet with you to assess your skills and abilities, and then develop a personalized plan to address your specific needs.
The Travel Trainer will assist you throughout your entire travel training experience. Travel destinations are the trainee’s choice and can include: work, school, medical appointments, and recreation sites.
Travel training is provided free of charge except for your bus fare during training.
Travel Training follows an easy, step-by-step learning process. You’ll learn to:
- Plan your trip
- Read and understand route map and schedules
- Recognize bus routes, bus stops and landmarks
- Get to and from your bus stop
- Pay fares and purchase passes
- Safely cross the street and other important pedestrian skills
