Catalytic Converter Thefts

The Stevens Point Police Department has seen a significant increase in thefts of catalytic converters. Officers have taken reports of nine thefts this month alone. When these thefts occur, they happen rather fast - they only take a couple of minutes.

The main vehicle that has been targeted is the Toyota Prius, although other vehicle make and models have been victim as well.

We believe the people responsible are working in a team of two - one uses a jack to lift up the vehicle and cut off the catalytic converter and the other is a lookout.

Please be alert to vehicles that you may not recognize driving by your residence multiple times in a day, possibly planning their approach. Please try to park your vehicle in a well-lit area if it is not able to be in a garage.

If you do fall victim to a theft, try to limit walking around the vehicle and call the police so we can collect as much evidence as possible.
