Yulga Park in Stevens Point received a generous donation enabling the purchase & installation of a swing set & safety surfacing earlier this year. Friends & neighbors of the park, Dr. Ralph & Marcia Locher, approached the City with the idea in late 2021.
Marcia and Dr. Locher saw a need for swings in the neighborhood and inquired if the City would consider allowing swings in this location. What started as an idea turned out to be a huge upgrade for this neighborhood of the City.
“The Stevens Point community has been supportive of Ralph’s career as a pediatrician. We thought it would be nice to give something back to the community that supported us. Parks are dear to my heart so we thought this would be a good match,” said Marcia Locher.
Mayor Mike Wiza, Park Commission Chair Wayne Sorenson, Parks Director Dan Kremer, and Forestry Superintendent Todd Ernster joined Dr. Locher and Marcia for a photo and official grand opening of the swings earlier this week.
“It’s always inspiring to see people passionate about our parks," said Mayor Mike Wiza. “Dr. Locher and Marcia’s generosity is a part of what makes our community great.”
“The Lochers' gift adds a wonderful new element to Yulga Park, and is another example of how important parks are to the residents of Stevens Point,” said Park Commission Chair, Wayne Sorenson.
Yulga Park is located in the Whitetail Subdivision on the city’s far northeast side. The park is open daily 30 minutes before sunrise until 11 pm. The park is immediately adjacent to the Green Circle Trail and the Yulga Disc Golf Course.
