The Mayor of the City of Stevens Point has the following responsibilities:
- Serves as full-time Chief Executive Officer of the City
- Presides over City Council meetings, votes in the event of a tie
- Executes veto powers over any ordinance approved by the Common Council (a mayoral veto can be overturned by a two-thirds vote of the Common Council)
- Serves as the chairman of the Board of Public Works and the City Plan Commission.
There are no limits restricting the number of four-year terms an individual may serve as mayor.
Mayor Wiza has lived in the Stevens Point area his whole life and has been active in the community for many of those years. Mike attended SPASH and UWSP, and worked in the IT field prior to becoming Mayor. He and his wife, Chris, have one daughter, Madison.
Before being elected Mayor, Mike served as a City Alderman for over 10 years and a Portage County Supervisor for over 9. He has also been very active in outdoor and conservation groups including the Izaak Walton League, Prime Water Anglers and others.
Mike believes we need to be responsible stewards of the world around us, and has focused on sustainable initiatives and public participation both before and since being elected Mayor in April of 2015.
