John Quirk

The Community Media Manager is responsible for the operations of the City's Website and Social Media, its TV Channel (984 on Charter Cable), and its Low Power Radio Station, WSNP-LP 105.9 FM.

John graduated from UWSP in 1991 with a BS in English with minors in writing and biology. He began "working" with Stevens Point Community TV as a volunteer just to fulfill a lifelong interest in video production, and quickly became very focused on local government communications.

His volunteer time led to a three-quarter time job with Community TV in 1992, and he became Manager in 1994. John's desire to see Community TV flourish led him to connect with other managers in the state, and together they formed the Wisconsin Association of PEG channels, now known as Wisconsin Community Media, an organization of over 45 Community Media Centers.

Because of his personal interest in creating websites, John volunteered, again, to create the City's first website in 1999, and that work eventually led to his position moving from three-quarter time to full time.

During his years of experience here, he has received continual formal training in website development, video production, photo editing, and in 2014 received a certification in User Experience from the Nielsen Norman Group, a world leader in UX design and research. His work on the City website, which has won an Award of Excellence from the International Academy of the Visual Arts, earned him a Mayoral Commendation in 2011.

In keeping with his tradition of expanding the City's communication methods, in 2015 John started WSNP-LP, a Low Power FM Radio Station which broadcasts music, local government meetings, and emergency information on 105.9 FM.

John is a graduate of the nine-month certificate program, the Certified Government Digital Services Professional, offered by the National Association of Government Web Professionals, the Public Technology Institute, and the Rutgers University Center for Government Services.

John met his wife, Penny, while recording the Pet Profiles TV show at the Humane Society in 1993 and they married in 1994. The Quirks enjoy bicycling, scuba diving, snow shoeing, Jeeping, and improving their home on the north side of Stevens Point, which is always a haven for adopted/rescued dogs and cats.
